As our bodies continue to grow and change with our pregnancies, there are a lot of worries that come to mind. There are also a lot of, dare I say, "disgusting" aspects of pregnancy that can be hard to talk about with other people. Discharge during pregnancy is one of those disgusting things! Isn't it nice to be able to come online and find information without having to ask our mothers'? There are three types of discharge during pregnancy that is common enough to warrant an explanation.
* Bleeding
It is very common to see bloody discharge during pregnancy. It most commonly occurs after sex. You should know that this is completely normal. Your cervix is very sensitive while you are pregnant and any disturbance can cause bleeding. You might notice some bleeding after an exam as well, this is also due to disturbing the cervix and is also completely normal. There are some instances of bloody discharge however that are cause for concern.
Call or go into your doctor's office IF:
*The bleeding occurs any time during the first trimester
*You experience contractions or cramps with the bleeding
*If you have bleeding that soaks more than one pad per hour.
*You have bleeding for a long period of time (more than 24 hours)
*Yeast Infections
If you see a thick, white lumpy discharge during pregnancy you may have a yeast infection which is very common when you are pregnant. Some women have these more than others. One sign that the discharge is actually yeast and not something more serious include itching or burning along with the discharge. A lot of women wonder whether it is okay to take an over the counter medication such as Monistat for thier yeast infections when they are pregnant. The answer to this is YES! Monistat is okay during pregnancy.
A word of warning: You may not have a yeast infection! My best advice is to call your doctors office if you think that you have a yeast infection because this discharge during pregnancy could be something completely different that needs a different treatment.
Clear Fluid
You should really be take note of this type of discharge during pregnancy since there is a possibility that it could be amniotic fluid especially if it turns up in the last part of your pregnancy. This could POSSIBLY be a sign of a leak in your amniotic sack (the sack of water which holds your baby). If this is the case, you need to seek medical attention right away.
There is a simple test that they can do to see if this discharge is actually amniotic fluid or something else. Many times, this turns out to be urine. Embarrassing? Yes. But it is what the mystery discharge usually turns out to be!
Call your doctor, however, if you see these signs, then you should head for the ER:
*A bloody discharge along with this clear fluid
*Regular contractions or pain with the discharge
Normally we will experience an increase in overall discharge during pregnancy. It is important to know what to look for. Most of the time our discharge will be milky and about the consistency of yogurt. If you are concerned, always call your doctor! - 15343
