There exists an elite group of hard core bodybuilders who pump like hell and just love strutting round and showing off their muscles and only focus on competitions and winning them and making a space in their trophy cabinet. This is all very well but their training does have a basis and continually keeps up with the ever rising standards that are expected at modern day physique contests with regards muscular form.
Physique competitions are the deciding factor on how bodybuilders are inspired and their hopes are the result of what comes after big events. The whole bodybuilding industry is covered in the muscle mags but they are responsible for giving the guidance needed by budding physique competitors. The top contests are reported big time and the winners reveal all their secrets on training, diet and anything else that may help them on the way to having the best physique in the world.
So we have seen just why such contests are so important to set high standards in the bodybuilding world so now let's have a look at the judges themselves and the criteria they employ to reach the necessary goals required to keep the ball rolling.
Who gives the judges their guidance and authorizes them how to judge? Does a judge need a certain standard of qualification to do what they do? I was once sat right behind a judge who kept asking me for the number of the performing contestant, so should they have to take a compulsory eye test for example?
Apart from sight problems though, there are still problems with international judges who may be suffering from jet lag which has lead to some extremely controversial decisions being made in the past. Fortunately there are very sophisticated scoring systems now in place which help the prevention of individual judges making stupid decisions.
Like football refs, PC. judging is not a route to popularity, and special favors would soon be discovered by astute fans. Sure it is nice to have expenses covered (and why not) to be at the heart of things. For retired bodybuilders to stay in touch with the game. But dropping for an instant my cynicism, my belief is most judges are genuine lovers of the game, and simply want to contribute or repay a sport they have spent most of their lives contributing or participating.
It goes without saying though that the decisions made by judges can make all the difference to the world to the goals that are set by individual competitors. A couple of comments that were made in the past can really put things into perspective. Firstly Russ Warner who was a famous photographer was quoted as saying that judges can either send you home a hero or cast you into a pit, while Rick Wayne a legendary Weider writer once stated that Judges were just like a secret sect and that nothing of a competitor's life could ever influence them.
These though are only a couple of personal decisions. Charisma and reputation always play an important part in our human subconscious minds and subsequently the decisions we have to make. Beauty certainly is "in the eye of the beholder." Although we are talking about doctors, lawyers, teachers and practicing and retired bodybuilders, judges are just human beings and therefore have to be open to criticism regarding their own qualifications and decisions.
