Get Into Shape After Pregnancy

By Cathy Marie

How quickly a mother can expect her old shape back after pregnancy can old be based on guidelines as there are no hard and fast rules. Almost all women will lose up to 14 pounds within the first fourteen days after delivery but this is primarily a combination of the baby's weight plus the placenta and fluid.

An additional seven pounds or so of body fat is gained during pregnancy but after birth when the uterus reverts back to its normal size and the hormone level starts to drop then the weight will start to fall as well. The extra fat gained is used as energy while the mother is breastfeeding but there is no magic formula to calculate how quickly each individual's excess weight will reduce.

Whatever you may feel, it did take almost nine months to gain the extra weight so do not expect miracles when it comes to losing it quickly even though the press is always showing shots of celebrity mothers who have lost it within a few short months. Some women will hang on to the last few pounds they have to lose until they stop breastfeeding because your body may want to cling to a few extra pounds to ensure you have enough energy to provide adequate milk for the baby but every woman's experience is unique with respect to this.

However, nutrition specialists are able to provide healthy diet plans and with regular physical activity there is no reason why you shouldn't get back to your normal size and weight. It is true to say that the majority of women will in fact get back to this stage within the year providing they behave as far as their food intake and exercise activities are concerned. However, some women will lose their pregnancy weight in as little as six to twelve weeks.

Many physical adjustments are made by each woman's body after birth which can hinder weight loss after pregnancy. In order to lose weight after pregnancy both safely, and effectively; a new mother should undertake a program of slow and steady dieting along with exercise that will produce long-term beneficial results.

One aspect that must be considered is the health of the mother and baby as additional fat during the breastfeeding stage is used to provide extra energy. While it may take over half a year for a mother to get close to her old metabolic rate and hormone level there may be some changes that are permanent.

Most women will lose up to fourteen pounds when they give birth but seeing as they may have put on over thirty, there will still be some way to go.

Although this weight loss after pregnancy is almost immediate, there is still a long way to go with perhaps another 21 pounds or so to lose but it needs to be done slowly perhaps even up to nine months. - 15343
